In addition to penalties imposed by the Court as a result of a DUI/DWI conviction, a person may also be faced with serious additional consequences. A DUI conviction may prevent a person from renting a vehicle from a commercial agency, depending on the policies of the rental company. Automobile insurance premiums of a person convicted of DUI will likely be increased and the policy may even be cancelled.

A DUI/DWI conviction may affect one's ability to obtain and/or maintain life, health insurance, and disability insurance. Additionally, a DUI conviction may negatively affect the status of a person's professional license ( i.e. Doctor, Lawyer, Nurse, Stock Broker, or Airline Pilot) and may affect one's ability to obtain employment in the future. Persons convicted of driving under the influence will also be restricted in their ability to acquire and/or maintain the possession of a firearm.

Finally, a DUI conviction may also affect one's ability to travel out of the United States. For instance, Canada has strict laws regarding the admission of individuals who have been convicted of DUI. See the web site of the Canadian Consulate General. Additionally, there may be consequences to the person charged with DUI/DWI which are dependent upon the facts of the case and the individual's circumstances. Therefore, it is important to consult an experienced and knowledgeable DUI defense lawyer as soon as possible after arrest.
